Willow has spent most of her life as her mother’s sidekick in a popular Las Vegas hypnotism show. So when she and her mom move back to their sleepy southern hometown to start over, she thinks she’s in for a life of quiet normalcy. Except that her new life turns out to be anything but, when she kinda sorta hypnotizes Quinton, the hottest guy on the football team, to fall madly, deeply, head over heels in love with her. But what started out as an innocent way to make her best friend, Max, jealous soon gets way out of hand, and Willow begins to wonder if the mind – and more importantly, the heart – is something you can really control.

Two years ago I read and fell in love with Jennifer Jabeley’s debut novel, LIPSTICK APOLOGY.  When I was offered the chance to review her sophomore novel, CRUSH CONTROL, I of course said yes.  While I did enjoy this one, I did not love it like I did LIPSTICK APOLOGY.  It was still a very cute book and the perfect summer read.

Willow Grey is in love with her best friend, Max.  Too bad he is dating someone else.  At least he seems to show some interest in her as more than a friend.  Then Willow get an idea.  Why not make Max jealous?  Show him what he is missing?  At first it seems like a great plan but then Willow realizes that first she has to find a guy to date to make him jealous. And what if that guy doesn’t actually want to date her?  Well that is where Willow’s skills with hypnosis come in and it is all downhill from there.

My absolute favorite thing about CRUSH CONTROL was the humor.  It cracked me up.  Willow and her mom had a great relationship that allowed them to be very open with each other about EVERYTHING.  They had some hilarious scenes.  Willow and one of her new friends, Georgia, also had some very funny scenes.  They were always up to no good and I loved all of Georgia’s pop culture references.  The best though was Willow’s dog, Oompa. He was insane! I loved him (although I would never want my dog to do some of the things he did!)

The whole thing about hypnosis was very interesting.  I have never had any interest in hypnosis so I knew nothing about it when I started the book.  I was never lost or confused though because it was explained so well.  I thought it was a unique twist to an otherwise unoriginal story.  It made Willow’s story a little different than all the other stories about girls secretly in love with their best friend.  =)

Overall, CRUSH CONTROL is a great book but not one of my favorites.  It is a cute story with multiple cute boys and just a fun story to read. If it sounds at all like something you might like, pick up a copy!

First line:  Once upon a time there was a boy.

  1. This sounds like an awesome paranormal! I love stories with psychics so this is an awesome twist on that! I love how there’s a strong family element and that those scenes are funny too! You don’t get that often, you tend to get good scenes about supportive family members, but they don’t always focus on humor.

Love how it’s about friends as well 🙂

    Lovely review 🙂
