In the beginning, there’s a boy standing in the trees . . . .

Clara Gardner has recently learned that she’s part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn’t easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there’s another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara’s less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she’d have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Boy am I glad I finally read this book.  I loved it!  Cynthia Hand’s debut novel is a fresh new take on angels and if you haven’t read it yet, you really should.

I did not care much for Clara in the beginning but that quickly changed. She cracked me up and I felt that I could relate to her (even though she was 1/4 angel.)  She was clumsy, nervous, the new kid, and crushing on a guy out of her league.  What teenage girl can’t relate to that?  Luckily she had a great mom and brother and two fabulous friends.  Then, of course, there were the boys; Christian and Tucker.  I myself am Team Tucker all the way.  He was sweet, funny, and above all else, a gentleman.  He is the kind of guy that teenage girls should be crushing on.  =)

The plot was good.  It wasn’t action-packed but there was enough going on to keep me interested and entertained. The ending also tied things up but left some questions unanswered for the next book.  I like that it wasn’t a total cliffhanger.

Overall, Unearthly really was a fabulous book and the hype is 100% deserved.  I have high hopes for the sequel!

First line: In the beginning, there’s a boy standing in the trees.

  1. I’m so glad you read this one. For once, caving to peer pressure was a good thing 😛 Tucker is totally the bomb too. For reals. I’m so jealous you’ve already read Hallowed!

  2. I have NOT read this book yet, but i doo! *I actually have SOO many books i want to read* lol but new books always come out 🙁

  3. First I want to mention how much I totally love the cover. No angel wings or anything like that, but a very ethereal girl and a beautiful dress. Great job, design team! I really liked how there wasn’t a whole lot of time to get to know Clara before she came into her powers.

  4. I loved how totally normal Clara is as a teen, despite all the things she’s dealing with with her purpose and everything.

I connected with her from page one! She was just awesome. But I get why it took you some time.

Team Tucker all the way (though I genuinely like Christian)

    Lovely review 🙂
