By the time Delaney Maxwell was pulled from a Maine lake’s icy waters by her best friend, Decker Phillips, her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead.

But somehow Delaney survived—despite the brain scans that show irreparable damage. Everyone wants Delaney to be fine, but she knows she’s far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can’t control or explain, Delaney now finds herself drawn to the dying, and when she meets Troy Varga, a boy who recently emerged from a coma with the same abilities, she is relieved to share this strange new existence. Unsure if her altered brain is predicting death or causing it, Delaney must figure out if their gift is a miracle, a freak of nature—or something else much more frightening….

I didn’t really have any expectations for Fracture but if I did, this book would have exceeded them.  Megan Miranda’s debut novel is suspenseful, sweet, and just an all-around page turner.

Fracture is a very messed up book and I mean that in the best possible way.  It was very hard to predict what was going to happen next because the story was so unlike anything I have read in the past.  I loved that about Fracture.  It surprised me many times.

Delaney was a great character.  It was so easy to sympathize with her.  She was confused, lost, and torn about many things.  She didn’t think she should have liked, she didn’t know what was wrong with her brain, she didn’t know if her best friend Decker would understand, and she spent a lot of time looking for help in the wrong places.  Decker was the perfectly imperfect guy and it was very hard not to fall for him.  He was always there for Delaney and it was easy to see how much he cared for her.  Troy, on the other hand, was very hard to figure out.  I won’t tell you more than that he was a very messed up kid.

Overall, Fracture is an amazing book that I highly recommend.  It is a quick, fun read and I can’t wait for Megan Miranda’s next book.  (Oh and I’m pretty sure this one is a standalone!)

  1. Ooh! Interesting thoughts! I’m planning to read this one soon (if I can get myself motivated to read anything at all :/) and I’ve seen a lot of really mixed reviews about it, so I’m really glad to see that you enjoyed it! 🙂

(And yay for stand alone! 😛 )

  2. I just read this a couple days ago, and OHMYGOD! *sigh* I would have given this book a 5 star rating, if it **spoilers?** weren’t for the lack of closure we have with the friends…

But Decker and Delaney ~ I love reading about these kinds of relationships! And despite the love-triangle/square sort of thing that happens, it didn’t bug me at all because it’s all kind of facilitated by their messed up feelings for each other. It was never like “Oh, I don’t know who I want to be with…”, you know?

That ending is still so heavily implanted in my mind, it plays over and over, and it wraps up the story very nicely. I love when I comment on reviews of books I’ve just read. It’s a nice brain-jogger for review writing. 😉

The thing about Troy is that he addressed some interesting philosophical issues–like, what constitutes a human experience, and what are the limitations of mortality? It’s also kind of funny since I’m reading The Fault in Our Stars, which also goes into these things. This book just reads out like a movie. Fun and fast, like you said.

  3. I really adored the creepiness in this one! The lake, the lake is almost alive I think, and Troy is one of the most unnerving boys I’ve ever read about. I don’t know what it was about him, even before the big reveal, but he freaked me out.

    Lovely review 🙂
