After a long and heartbreaking journey to Dimitri’s birthplace in Siberia, Rose Hathaway has finally returned to St. Vladimir’s—and to her best friend, Lissa Dragomir. It’s graduation, and the girls can’t wait for their real lives outside of the Academy’s cold iron gates to finally begin. But even with the intrigue and excitement of court life looming, Rose’s heart still aches for Dimitri. He’s out there, somewhere.

She failed to kill him when she had the chance, and now her worst fears are about to come true. Dimitri has tasted her blood, and she knows in her heart that he is hunting her. And if Rose won’t join him, he won’t rest until he’s silenced her…forever.

But Rose can’t forget what she learned on her journey—whispers of a magic too impossible and terrifying to comprehend. A magic inextricably tied to Lissa that could hold the answer to all of Rose’s prayers, but not without devastating consequences. Now Rose will have to decide what—and who—matters most to her. In the end, is true love really worth the price?

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t read the first four books in this series, this review will contain spoilers.

So I really have fallen in love with the Vampire Academy series.  I can’t get enough of them.  Sadly, I did not love this one nearly as much as I have the previous four books.  I enjoyed it, of course, but it was definitely not the best of the series.

What I really did not like about this book was the plot.  It was fast-paced at the beginning, slowed way down in the middle, and then picked back up at the end.  Normally I fly through these books but I didn’t with this one.  I just wasn’t hooked.

Rose also kind of bothered me in this book.  She was whiny at parts and all “poor me.”  I could not believe it. Normally she is very strong and funny.  She was still plenty hilarious at parts which helped make up for the whiny parts.  Her relationship with Adrian also confused me but I won’t go into details so I don’t give anything away.

Overall, I enjoyed Spirit Bound but it is my least favorite of the series so far.  Fans of the first four books will enjoy it but expect it to be a little slower than normal.

  1. I wasn’t a huge fan of book 4 but I liked Spirit Bound more than I did Blood Promise. I too was disappointed that Rose was so whiny in this book. I am used to her being strong and determined not indecisive and whiny.
Book 6 was great and I was so sad that it was the end of the series. I’m very interested to see what you think of Last Sacrifice.

  2. In hindsight? I think Spirit Bound was my least favorite book (I just finished the series about a two weeks ago.) But I also see where it fit into the big scheme of things.

That said? Last Sacrifice is so quick moving that the series redeems itself for Spirit Bound!

  3. I kind of agree with you. Spirit bound did slow up a bit, especially after the fast paced Blood Promise. But I still loved it! It wasn’t my least liked out of the whole series, that would be The Last Sacrifice. Blood Promise was my absolute favorite! It was so epic! Great review!

  4. Rose was pretty weak in this book. i feel that the first three books were the only amazing books in this series. the rest focused too much on the plot and romance and less on the characters.

  5. I really loved Spirit Bound although it wasn’t my favourite book either! I recently just finished the Vampire Academy series and I really loved the whole series! Awesome review, Katie! Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂 I hope you enjoy the last book as well!

  6. I think Rose was just depressed in this one. I think it was all too much for her, and the thought of Dimitri just filled her with hopelessness. So in that I get her change in mood.

I loved the magic stuff though!

    Lovely review 🙂
