Galen, a Syrena prince, searches land for a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. It’s while Emma is on vacation at the beach that she meets Galen. Although their connection is immediate and powerful, Galen’s not fully convinced that Emma’s the one he’s been looking for. That is, until a deadly encounter with a shark proves that Emma and her Gift may be the only thing that can save his kingdom. He needs her help–no matter what the risk.

Of Poseidon is just in time for a summer read and it’s so perfect.  Full of romance, laughs, and Syrena, this is the ideal poolside read.

Emma is your average teenage girl with a bit more awkward clumsiness than most.  She’s hilarious, both when she’s trying to be and especially when she’s not trying.  She’s also a bit hot-headed but most of the time, with most people, she’s a sweetheart.  And even when she gets a little nasty she only does it to defend herself or someone she cares about.  She’s kind of like a mama bear in that aspect (or maybe a mama fish?)

Galen is a totally romantic swoon-worthy boy.  He’s awkward at times, super confident at others.  He’s torn about his feelings for Emma so he does some stupid things but he does them for the right reasons.  He’s kind, smart, funny, and loyal.  He’s especially loyal to his sister, Rayna, and his best friend, Toraf.  Rayna can be a bit of a pain in the ass but she means well.  She’s not as bad as she seems at first.  Toraf is one giant goof ball who cracked me up.  His relationship with Rayna was so messed up but so funny.  They were pretty dang cute together. Also, there are actually parental figures in Of Poseidon.  Emma’s mom is a very protective mom who loves her daughter and wants what’s best for her.  She’s your typical embarrassing mom and she was awesome.  Rachel, the mother figure to Galen and Rayna, was also pretty great.  The characters are the real reason I loved this book so much.

The plot is attention-grabbing from the start.  This is one book that both starts and ends with a bang.  There’s a little mystery, some romance, and some shocking surprises.  The ending was a bit predictable (I saw it coming from about 60 pages in) but it really didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book.  I’m very eager to see where things will go in the next book.

What I felt was lacking though was Syrena history and time actually spent with the Syrena.  There was some history given about the Syrena’s but I felt like that could have been a much bigger part of the book.  Also, there was very little time actually spent in the world of the Syrena.  Hopefully the next book will have more of the Syrena’s story.

Overall, Of Poseidon is one I would recommend to readers that are reluctant to check out “mermaid” stories.  Full of mystery, romance, and tons of laughs this is one that will have you hooked.  (Hooked.  Get it?)
