When high school junior Natalie-or Dr. Aphrodite, as she calls herself when writing the relationship column for her school paper-is accused of knowing nothing about guys and giving girls bad relationship advice, she decides to investigate what guys really think and want. But the guys in her class won’t give her straight or serious answers. The only solution? Disguising herself as a guy and spending a week at Underwood Academy, the private all-boy boarding school in town. There she learns a lot about guys and girls in ways she never expected-especially when she falls for her dreamy roommate, Emilio. How can she show him she likes him without blowing her cover?

Babe In Boyland is a book I have been eyeing since I first saw it on the shelves over a year ago! It looked like a fun, laugh out loud, contemporary read and I’m happy to say that that’s exactly what it was. It was the perfect read for a lazy summer day and I devoured it!

Natalie is a very easy to like character. She is funny, nice, and willing to laugh at herself.  She gets herself into quite a few awkward situations and they make for quite a few laughs.  Sure she’s not the most well-developed character but with this kind of book it’s not really necessary.

Natalie’s friends, Chloe and Darcy, were fabulous.  They were willing to some crazy things to help Natalie.  And while they did get into fights, they were always looking out for each other and were willing to forgive.  Their friendship was one of the best things about the book.

The story itself is not exactly unique but it’s still hilarious.  Girls goes undercover at boys school, falls for boy as a boy, things blow up in girl’s face.  If you’ve seen the movie She’s The Man, you know this story.  However that did not detract from my enjoyment of the book since there were just enough changes to make it interesting.

Overall, Babe In Boyland is a must-read for fans of laugh out loud contemporaries.  If Jody Gehrman’s other books are anything like this one I will have to check them out.

  1. I adore this book- it’s such a fun story. I tried to read her Triple Shot Betty books though, but stopped because the first one bored me:( But I hope you like them!

  2. I have been meaning to read this one for quite some time! A couple friends read it and said it was hilarious and I am glad to hear you felt the same. There is something about a girl masquerading as a boy that I love and it reminds me of the movie Just One of the Guys that is also always good for a laugh. I’ll definitely need to make time to read this soon. Great review! πŸ™‚

I love it when characters are fine with laughing at themselves, not taking themselves too seriously. It really gives them charm and likability πŸ™‚
