Blog Tour: Q&A With Emily McKay + Giveaway!

book cover of The Farm by Emily McKay

Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race…

And now for a short Q&A with Emily about a few scenes in the novel!

a) What was your favorite scene to write and why?

The scene where Carter buys Lily a pack of Rolo’s. I had so much fun with that scene. I wanted them to have a moment that’s charming and light in the midst of an otherwise dark, gritty world.

b) What was the most difficult scene to write?

That same scene was incredibly hard to write because Carter has to reveal a lot of information about the world in that scene and striking the right balance was difficult. I went through about five different versions before I was happy with it.

  1. Hi Katie,
Thanks for having me here at your blog! I really appreciate it!

It’s funny, when the publicist at Penguin was setting up the blog, she sent out this big Q&A with all the questions at once and then they divided them up and sent out a few here and there. So when I was answering those two questions within a stack of twenty, my answers seemed long enough, but now that I see them pulled out, I kind of feel like a slacker. 🙂

Maybe I should post a snippet of the actual scene, so your readers will get a better sense of the scene. What do you think?

    1. Thanks, Ka-Ching! You have a nice looking blog!
