Short Story Saturday: The Lion and the Unicorn: Part The First by Nancy Holder

Short Story Saturday was created by Lauren at 365 Days of Reading.  I can’t guarantee that I’ll post a review every Saturday but I will post one as often as I can!

I am currently reading Two And Twenty Dark Tales: Dark Retellings of Mother Goose Rhymes.

Author: Nancy Holder
Anthology: Two And Twenty Dark Tales

Summary: The Lion and the Unicorn: Part the First is a retelling of The Lion and the Unicorn mothergoose rhyme.

My thoughts:  The Lion and the Unicorn: Part the First is my first instance with Nancy Holder’s writing and I must say, I’m impressed.  Not only does the story capture readers from the very beginning but so does the writing.  Nancy Holder has a very descriptive style of writing that works perfectly for this type of story.  While the story is very short, it doesn’t feel that way.  I felt connected to Susana and the story felt fleshed out.

Overall, The Lion and the Unicorn: Part the First is a short story that I definitely recommend.  Since it is only the first part the end is a bit of a cliffhanger but I’m looking forward to the conclusion.

  1. The gothic retellings that have been published lately all sound fantastic and The Lion and the Unicorn is just the same! Short stories can make it difficult to connect with them but I’m glad you didn’t have a problem 🙂
Definitely checking this book out! Thanks for the review, Katie!

  2. Nancy Holder has written many amazing books. I don’t think she can do any wrong with her stories. Her Possessions series is so good 🙂
