My Top Tearjerkers | Summertime Sadness

to the most incredible mum on the planet

I don’t know about you guys but every now and then I love a good cry.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to cry because my dog died or I slammed my finger in a door, I want to cry because a book is so beautiful or so heartbreaking.  Here are my top ten favorite tearjerkers!

1. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

I read this book for fun originally and then for some odd reason I decided it would be a good idea to re-read it for my young adult lit class.  I guess I just like to torture myself.  I thought maybe I wouldn’t cry so much since I knew what was going to happen but that was so not the case.  It hit me just as hard the second time around. This book is historical fiction at it’s best and I think anyone will find it hard not to cry when reading it.

2. All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

When this book first came out I saw so many rave reviews for it that I knew I’d have to read it.  It helped that it was contemporary and that is my all-time favorite thing to read.  I had trouble getting into this one but once I made it past the first 50-100 pages, I was hooked and I knew I was in for a rough time.  For a while I was almost certain I’d be able to finish the book without crying but that was so not the case.  I was bawling like a baby by the end of it.  Any book that can play with your emotions as much as All The Bright Places definitely deserves a spot on the TBR.

3. If I Stay by Gayle Forman

How could I not have this on my list?  The book made me sob and even the trailer for the movie made me tear up.  I still haven’t actually watched the movie but I’m expecting lots of tears.  Any kind of story that involves the death of a family member gets to me.  Being able to relate to Mia, in this case, was not a good thing.  I could not stop thinking about my own family when reading this one so I’m pretty sure I barely stopped crying while reading this one.

4. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

I really did not expect the kind of emotional reaction I had to We Were Liars.  It seemed like a fun summer read when I first started it but it quickly turned into something so much more.  There is mystery and romance but above all else, there is serious heartbreak.  You’ve been warned!

5. 20 Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

I read this book so long ago but I still remember exactly how it made me feel.  Not only did Anna love her best friend’s brother, she had to hide it from everyone so that when he died, no one knew she was mourning her first love.  I knew going into this one that it would be emotional and it was a good thing that I was prepared.

6. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

This book.  Oh gosh.  It’s not the typical tearjerker but it definitely gave me all the feels.  I think it was just so easy to feel how Charlie felt.  As if that wasn’t enough, then there is everything that Charlie goes through and it just broke my heart.  I feel like most people have already read this one but if not, you should.

7. Telling Christina Goodbye by Lurlene McDaniel

This one might actually be a lie because I haven’t read it in so long but years ago it made me so sad! One of my friends introduced me to Lurlene McDaniel’s books and honest to goodness, I’m not sure there is a happy one out there.  This one just stuck with me most because it was the first book of hers I’d ever read.

What are some of your favorite tearjerkers? Have you read any of these?

  1. I cried at 1, 2, 3, and 6 on your list and haven’t read number seven. I think the only reason I didn’t cry at WE WERE LIARS is because I was too wrapped up in figuring out the twist at the end that everyone was sworn to keep secret. The hype on that book ended up killing it for me, unfortunately. And I didn’t cry at TWENTY BOY SUMMER, but Ockler made me cry with FIXING DELILAH. I love books that pull at all my emotions!

  2. Oh gosh, I can’t actually read purposeful tearjerkers! Haha! I prefer the fluff…. but The Start of Me and You made me tear up for multiple reasons and I loved it. I cry easily which is why I tend to avoid them so I guess most of my crying comes from character deaths in books I’m reading or horrible misunderstandings, or just really heart-heavy feelings, like Boo Radley in To Kill A Mockingbird.
