My Latest Obsession: the Charley Davidson series!

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus lately.  I lost interest in reading and I didn’t really feel like I had much to post about since this is my book blog.  However, I recently discovered the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones and I quickly came out of my reading slump.  I devoured this series and I didn’t want to do a full review for all 8 published books in the series but I wanted to feature them some way so here you go!

This series is by far one of the funniest I have ever read.  Charley has such a great sense of humor and even though it was a bit morbid at times, I cracked up a lot.  I haven’t laughed so hard in quite some time.  The situations she found herself in were so crazy and she just rolled with the punches.  She accepted her crazy lot in life and she really embraced it.  It also helped that she had great family and friends to back her up.  I admit the family situation in the first few books wasn’t perfect but I liked seeing her relationships develop.  Cookie was the ultimate best friend.  She was just as crazy as Charley and didn’t mind getting the crazy situations that developed around Charley.  Uncle Bob was also pretty great.  I grew to love him very quickly.

The stories are pretty predictable but they are fun.  Each book continues the major storyline from the first book but they also each have their own mysteries so there is some closure at the end of each book.  I think I enjoy the mysteries in each book even more than the underlying story about Charley and Reyes somehow defeating Satan.  The mysteries are fun and Charley goes about solving them in completely convoluted ways.  Her interactions with dead people help with the mysteries and honestly, those are some of my favorites parts of the books.  A lot of the dead people have terrible stories and I admit to tearing up a time or two but a lot of them have really humorous interactions with Charley.  Take her Aunt Lil for example.  She’s quite the character.

The Charley Davidson series is like Veronica Mars and Stephanie Plum with the addition of paranormal elements.  Charley has the same sassiness as Veronica Mars and a lot of the crazy antics of Stephanie Plum (along with an awesome sidekick).  I highly recommend this series for both adult and young adult fans.  I look forward to continuing this series and I definitely plan on checking out Darynda Jones young adult series.

Have you read these books?  Did you love them as much as I did?  If you have read them, do you have any recommendations for similar books?

My Latest Obsession: The 100

I don’t usually have time to read during the school semester but I always make time to watch some TV.  I typically watch shows that I already know and love but this time I decided to try something new.  All the bloggers talking about The 100 on Twitter helped make my decision.  (Also, just look at that cast photo.  They are all so gorgeous, I couldn’t not watch.)

The 100 is based on a book series from Kass Morgan which I have not read. I have no clue if reading it will make any difference in regards to the enjoyment of the show.  Just in terms of watching the show for fun, it’s supremely awesome.  I watched the first season (13 episodes) in a day.  The second season is currently underway and the mid-season finale is this coming Wednesday.

The cast is what makes this show so awesome.  You will probably start the show hating most of them but that’s totally okay.  Clarke was really one of the only ones that I liked at first.  The rest of them kind of grow on you.  Clarke is amazing from the start.  She is one bad ass female lead.  She takes shit from no one.  I love how self-sufficient she is but she’s not afraid to show her weaker side and ask for help.  Bellamy and Finn both take some getting used to.  Bellamy is a complete tool in the early episodes and Finn just seems like a bit of a player.  Octavia seems like an airhead bimbo but that changes quickly. You can’t really judge the cast from the early episodes.  Give them a little time to grow.

The early episodes are also hard to love but that’s only the first two or so.  Personally I had no trouble getting addicted after one episode but I’ve heard plenty of people say that they didn’t get hooked until episode three or so.  Just give it a little time if you don’t love it at first. Things really get crazy on the ground and the show takes lots of unpredictable turns later on.

I highly recommend checking out The 100 if you like any of the CW’s other shows.  It’s not my typical TV show but I’m glad I gave it a try. I really think I’m going to have to check out the books while I wait for the show to return after the mid-season finale.

My Latest Obsession: The Originals!

My Latest Obsession is a post that I will be doing every now and then featuring something I’m obsessed with. It could be anything from a song to a cartoon character, it all just depends on my mood.

My latest obsession is the TV show The Originals!  (Really, I think I’m just obsessed with TV.)

I’m a huge Vampire Diaries fan.  I love that show.  However, I wasn’t always a fan of the characters on the show, especially Klaus.  When I heard that the original family would be getting a spin-off show, I was skeptical.  I knew I’d watch it (mainly for Elijah and Rebekah) but I didn’t expect to love it as much as I do.  I’m even starting to like Klaus!

The Originals can stand on it’s own.  There is no need to watch The Vampire Diaries before watching The Originals although I would recommend it since I love it.  The Originals has a cast that’s made up of some old faces (Klaus, Hayley, Elijah, Rebekah) and some new ones (Marcel, Cami, Davina).  It’s a great mix and I love the new characters that they’ve introduced so far.

First up, there’s Marcel.  He’s supremely sexy and definitely kind of scary.  I want to hate him but there are times when I just can’t.  There are flashbacks showing how he met Klaus, what his relationship is with Rebekah, and some other things.  The flashbacks are really what make me like him.  It will definitely be interesting to see how he went from orphaned boy to vampire king of New Orleans.

Then there is Davina.  That girl is scary!  She’s young and pretty but she’s also a super powerful witch. She has tons of power and she’s not afraid to use it.  She’s also got a bit of an attitude which I love about her.  Deep down she’s just a teenage girl who has been sheltered for far too long and just wants to live her life.  I look forward to seeing how she handles the introduction of the original vampires.

As for the old cast, Rebekah is just as badass as ever, Elijah is the perfect gentleman, Klaus is still a murderous lunatic (but I’m okay with that), and Hayley is getting better.  I’m not sure how I feel about her yet but she’s not as obnoxious as she was in The Vampire Diaries.  It’s an improvement.

The plot is mysterious and very intriguing.  I never know what’s going to happen.  I love that about The Originals.  To be honest, things in The Vampire Diaries have gotten a little predictable.  That is so not the case with The Originals.  Each episode seems to have a new twist and I’m eager to see how every last detail is going to tie together.

If you haven’t already checked out The Originals, do it now!  It’s worth your time!

Have you watched The Originals?  What do you think of it?  If not, do you plan to?  Let me know in the comments!

My Latest Obsession: Dexter!

My Latest Obsession is a new post that I will be doing every now and then featuring something I’m obsessed with. It could be anything from a song to a cartoon character, it all just depends on my mood.

Are you noticing a theme with these posts?  Clearly I’m obsessed with TV shows.

My latest obsession is the TV show Dexter!

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen me talk about Dexter lately.  I recently watched all 7 seasons of Dexter.  Yes, I know, I’m crazy.  I just couldn’t help myself though.  Once I started the series, I couldn’t stop.

If you’ve never heard of Dexter, I’ll give you a little background.  Dexter is a show on Showtime.  There are currently 7 seasons with 12 episodes each season.  June 30 begins the 8th season of Dexter and most likely, the last season.  Dexter, himself, is a very lovable serial killer.  He works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro homicide department and when he’s not working he hunts down serial killers and kills them.  Other members of the cast include his sister, Debra, his girlfriend, Rita, and other members of the police force.
The cast is definitely what makes this show so awesome.  Michael C. Hall as Dexter is brilliant.  I wasn’t sure what to think about him for the first few episodes but I quickly came to love him.  He’s definitely very messed up and kind of creepy but I think a lot of people will still like him.  He is a good guy at heart.  Then there is Deb who is probably my favorite character ever.  She is blunt, she cusses a lot, and she’s kind of  crazy but those are all things that make her awesome.  She’s smart and funny as well and I loved seeing her progression throughout the series.  The rest of the Miami Metro homicide department is also pretty great.  There’s Vince Masuka who is totally perverted but so funny.  Angel Batista is sweet and kind of awkward and he quickly became a favorite of mine.  Lieutenant LaGuerta wasn’t that great at first but she grew on me. There are some more cast members introduced throughout the series but these are my favorites.
The plot is always crazy.  Each season there is a new serial killer that is the focus of the Miami Metro Homicide Department’s investigation.  Of course, the same serial killer is usually the focus of Dexter’s own personal manhunt as well.  The serial killers get progressively creepier as the show goes on and I loved that.
I’m not really squeamish or scared easily when it comes to things like this so I never had problems with this show but obviously I wouldn’t really recommend it for people who don’t like blood or murder.  It’s not my normal type of show but I’m so glad I finally decided to watch it.
Do you watch Dexter?  What do you think of it?

My Latest Obsession: Revenge!

My Latest Obsession is a new post that I will be doing every now and then featuring something I’m obsessed with. It could be anything from a song to a cartoon character, it all just depends on my mood.

Are you noticing a theme with these posts?  Clearly I’m obsessed with TV shows.

My latest obsession is the TV show Revenge!

Recently, at the urging of one of my friends, I started Revenge.  The first season is on Netflix so I figured I didn’t really have an excuse not to watch it.  I started it with low expectations just because I wasn’t sure what to expect but even if I’d gone in with the highest expectations, this show would have exceeded them.

The cast of this show is perfect.  There are the people you love and the people you love to hate.  There really isn’t much of a middle ground with these guys.  Emily is your protagonist but it’s odd because she is out for revenge and she’s a little sociopathic.  Sometimes I question why I’m rooting for her since she is kind of crazy.   However, I can’t help but feel sorry for her and want her to get revenge on these terrible people.  And to help her with her quest for revenge is Nolan Ross.  Nolan is probably my favorite character from the show.   He adds some much needed humor and I just love him.  I also love Jack.  He’s such a sweetheart and I want him and Emily to get a happy ending.  Somehow. Then there are the people you love to hate: the Graysons.  The kids aren’t really bad news but the parents are pure evil.  Victoria and Conrad Grayson have no morals.  I want to see them get what’s coming to them.

The plot is crazy!  I never know where the show is going to go from one episode to the next.  Sure the story is all about revenge but it goes so much deeper than that.  Everything that happened with Emily’s dad is tied up with the Graysons who are tied up with some bad people who are tied up with people that Emily is close to and so on and so forth.  The plot is so twisted and awesome.  I really look forward to seeing where it goes now that I’m caught up and on season 2.

Do you watch Revenge?  What do you think of it?

My Latest Obsession: Pretty Little Liars!

My Latest Obsession is a new post that I will be doing every now and then featuring something I’m obsessed with. It could be anything from a song to a cartoon character, it all just depends on my mood.

My latest obsession is the TV show Pretty Little Liars!

I used to be obsessed with the Pretty Little Liars books by Sara Shepard.  I would rush out to buy them the day they came out and I’d usually be up late into the night reading them.  They were so suspenseful and just plain awesome.  When I heard about the TV show, I was skeptical and I refused to watch it.  That all changed when I was home sick one day and the only thing I could find to watch was a Pretty Little Liars marathon.  I was hooked after that.

I admit, I cheated.  I started watching Pretty Little Liars in the middle of season 2 without watching season 1 or the first half of season 2.  I was a little confused but not enough for me to stop watching.  It was only recently that I actually sat down to watch the episodes that I missed.  Admittedly, the first few episodes weren’t the best but the show really hit it’s stride mid-season 1.  All the actors fit the characters from the book perfectly and I honestly adore them all (even the ones I love to hate.)

My biggest worry about the show was that I would see all the surprises coming since I’d read the books.  That was so not the case.  The writers of the show really switched things up.  I am always just as shocked as everyone else when a new secret is revealed.  Normally I don’t like movies/TV shows that really deviate from the books but in this case it really works.

Do you watch Pretty Little Liars?  What do you think of it?

My Latest Obsession: Awkward.

My Latest Obsession is a new post that I will be doing every now and then featuring something I’m obsessed with. It could be anything from a song to a cartoon character, it all just depends on my mood.

My latest obsession is the tv show Awkward.

Awkward. is a show on MTV and it’s probably MTV’s best show, at least in my opinion.  It’s clever, funny, and so true.  Everything that happens to Jenna I could totally see happening in a regular high school.  Jenna is so easy to like and so are the rest of the characters.  Her friends Tamara and Ming are so funny and Matty and Jake are two totally awesome guys.  I can see why Jenna might be torn between the two.  Then there are Jenna’s parents who are pretty clueless when it comes to their daughter.  Val, the counselor, has to be the best character though.  She and Jenna have some hilarious conversations that crack me up.  Pretty much everything about this show cracks me up actually.
The show is on it’s second season and pretty much all of the episodes are available on MTV’s website.  The episodes are only about 20 minutes each which sucks but it makes it very easy to get through them all.  You guys should definitely check out this show.  Although, warning, it’s better for mature audiences.  It’s quite raunchy.
Have you seen Awkward.?  Are you as in love with the show as I am?

My Latest Obsession: Owls

Katie’s Book Blog is very obviously a book review blog but that’s not all I want it to be anymore.  I love reading and reviewing books but I also love a lot of other things and I want to start sharing those things with you guys.  My Latest Obsession is a new post that I will be doing every now and then featuring something I’m obsessed with.  It could be anything from a song to a cartoon character, it all just depends on my mood.

This first post is about my latest obsession with owls!

Unless you live under a rock I’m pretty sure you might have seen some owl figurines, candles, stickers, etc. at any store you might frequent.  These days it’s almost impossible to go anywhere without seeing something with owls on it.  I haven’t counted them but I probably have about 10-15 owls around my room in one way, shape, or form.  They are completely adorable and I love them.

What’s your stand on the latest owl craze?  Do you love them, hate them, don’t care either way?
