Fandom of the Month Club March | Marvel

I’ve been subscribed to Fandom of the Month club for quite some time now.  It was the first subscription box I subscribed to and the one I’ve stuck with the longest.  March was an exciting month for me because the theme was Marvel.  You may not know this about me but I’m a huge Marvel fan (I have a Captain America tattoo!) so I had high hopes for this month’s box.  Sadly, I was quite let down with everything included.

Loki Magnet

The first thing I saw when I opened the box was the magnet.  Each month an exclusive magnet is included that goes along with the theme.  This month’s magnet featured Loki and I was so excited to see it.  I do love the magnet and will be adding it to the rest of my collection.

Fandom bag

Next up was the bag that all the jewelry came in.  Once again, I was pretty happy with it.  It features Nick Fury’s eye patch and the quote “I still believe in heroes.”  Good quality and it looks awesome.

Spidey

Then came the first piece of jewelry which I was not impressed with.  The bracelet this month was a cuff bracelet made up of spiderwebs and featuring a Spider Man charm.  It could have been pretty cute except the Spider Man charm just kinda hangs there and is only attached at the top so it dangles from the front when you try and wear it.  I also fear that if I do actually wear it, the charm might not stay attached since it’s not secured very well.

Cap

Next came some extremely gaudy Captain America earrings.  I’m a huge Captain America fan but these are too gaudy even for me.  I’m always happy to show my love for Cap but these are just too out there.  Maybe I’d wear them for a fan convention or something like that but that’s about it.

Thor

This next piece I actually really do like.  I’m a big fan of rings and I always love when Fandom of the Month includes one in their box.  This month’s is probably the best I’ve ever gotten.  Thor’s hammer is featured on a rather large ring (it sits comfortably at the base of my finger and goes all the way up to my knuckle).  While it does make bending my finger a little difficult at times, it’s worth it.

Tony ARC

Last was a necklace with Tony Stark’s Arc Reactor featured as the charm.  Apparently it glows in the dark?  Don’t know why and don’t really care about glow in the dark jewelry.  I wouldn’t mind this one except it’s not very well made and the arc reactor isn’t actually centered to the backing.  I’m a little OCD so that annoys me about it although I’ll probably still wear it at least once or twice.

katie3stars

Overall, I’m not going to cancel my subscription because of this box because there were still a couple things that I did enjoy and will get some use out of.  I’m hoping my faith will be redeemed with the April box and we’ll see how I feel about my subscription after that.

Shop Review: Whoviandrea

whoviandrea

As you guys probably know from my Twitter, Instagram, and Etsy Obsessions posts, I love bookish merchandise.  Seriously, if I could get away with wearing nothing but bookish clothes and jewelry, I would.  I love showing my support for my fandoms through clothes, pillows, bookmarks, jewelry, and anything else you can think of.  When I was approached by Andrea about reviewing a couple of her products, I jumped at the chance.  So fair warning, I did receive these products for free but that does not affect my opinions.

(Click any of the images to be taken to the shop page for that item.)

IMG_1795

I knew I wanted to get something Harry Potter related and this design jumped out at me.  Hermione has always been my favorite character and I love the quote Andrea chose for the phone case.  The phone case is one from Redbubble and I was extremely pleased with it.  It’s a snap on case and it was a little difficult getting it on the phone at first but it fit perfect.  I admit, I drop my phone every now and then but I’m happy to say that the case stood up to drops on cement, wood floors, and tile.  Other than that, the colors and coating stand up to time and purses, jeans, and anywhere else I decided to store it for the day.

IMG_1950

I also chose this fandom inspired shirt.  It’s long sleeve and perfect for fall!  I have actually read all the books featured in the design so that’s kinda why I picked this one.  I’ve already worn this one a few times and it’s super comfy!  It fits true to size and it holds up against wear and washing.  I know she also has fitted shirts in her shop but I went with the unisex style and I really like it.  If you’re looking for a more comfy, loose style, go with the unisex.  Also, the sleeves are fitted at the wrists and while I normally don’t like that, there is enough stretch that it wasn’t uncomfortable.

As for the rest of the shop, I obviously can’t say anything about the quality of merchandise but I can show you some of my favorite designs.  Here are a few things still on my wishlist!  (All photos taken from Whoviandrea’s site.)

Hogwarts pillow

I adore this Hogwarts pillow and I’d love to add it to my Harry Potter collection.

Selection Hoodie

I’ve only read the first book in the Selection series but I really enjoyed it.  I wouldn’t mind rocking this Selection inspired hoodie.  It looks so cozy!

I was extremely pleased with my items from Whoviandrea’s shop and I’d definitely recommend ordering from her shop if you’re a book nerd like me.  From pillows to phone cases, Andrea has something for everyone in her shop.  And you know, if you’ve got a birthday coming up (or there’s always Christmas) you can add some of these items to your wishlist!

Have you ordered anything from Whoviandrea’s shop?  Is there a specific item that you’re dying to get?

Kobo Arc Review!

source
Up until recently, I was not a big fan of e-readers.  In fact, I did everything I could to avoid reading ebooks.  That changed when my physical books started taking over every bit of spare room in my house.  Now I’m a huge fan of ebooks and I’m quickly exploring the world of e-readers.  My most recent e-reader is the Kobo Arc.  Kobo provided me with a Kobo Arc for review and here is my totally honest opinion!
First off, the Kobo Arc is not just an e-reader, it’s also a fully functional Android tablet.  I use the e-reading feature more than any other but it’s nice to have the option to use it as a tablet.  It’s equipped with the Google Play Store which means thousands of apps are right at your fingertips.  You can even get other e-reader apps so if you have books on other devices, you can get them right on your Kobo.  There’s no need for more than one device with the Kobo Arc.
It has a 7′ screen that’s clear, crisp, and easy to see (even without glasses if you’re blind like me.)  The screen brightness has a great automatic setting that isn’t too bright or too dim but if you like it brighter or darker, there’s a simple way to change the brightness.  There is a slight glare (as always) in bright lights such as the sun but if you use the Kobo Arc indoors, the screen won’t hurt your eyes at all.
The e-reading experience on the Kobo Arc is lovely.  The Kobo store is easy to use and you can download books with the touch of a button.  (They also send quite a few coupons through email which are both great and terrible.  I always feel like I need to buy books if they are cheaper than normal.)  Once downloaded you can adjust the brightness and font size of the book to situate your own needs.  You can even change the margins, line spacing, and background/text color. It’s super easy to do that as well as highlight and bookmark pages and sections.
Also, like I mentioned earlier, you can download other e-reader apps such as the Kindle app.  That way, if you have books in Kindle format, you can read them on your Kobo.  The same can be done with the Nook app.  It’s super handy to have all e-reader apps on one device.
One of my favorite things about the Kobo Arc is the size and texture.  It’s not a large device (unlike many tablets) so it’s easy to hold.  It’s not bulky at all and not very heavy either.  You can easily hold it in just one hand.  The back of the Kobo Arc has a textured plate (that you can switch out) that makes gripping and holding onto the Kobo very easy.  I have a tendency to drop things and I haven’t had that happen with my new Kobo (yet.)

source
Another great feature is the Tapestries feature.  It’s a Kobo specific feature that tracks what you like and suggests more things for you to check out.  It’s a lot like Goodreads’ feature where it tracks your books and recommends similar ones.  Kobo’s Tapestry feature, however, does not just include books.  It’s a clever little tool that’s definitely alerted me to some things I wouldn’t normally have checked out.
My only complaints about the Kobo Arc are two minor things.  First, some apps freeze quite a bit.  I don’t know if it’s specific to certain apps or if it’s just the Kobo itself but they do freeze and sometimes you just have to let it sit for a little while before it will start functioning normally again.  My only other complaint is with the speakers.  There are two front facing speakers at the bottom of the device.  I love that they are front facing but the sound quality is not that great.  Once you get past a certain volume, things start to sound very tinny and just kind of bad.  It’s a minor complaint because I really don’t need anything on the Kobo to be that loud but you do have to remember that when turning up the volume.
Overall, the Kobo Arc is a great option if you’re looking for a small tablet and e-reader.  It’s a great price, has great features, and offers a wonderful reading experience.  I would highly recommend the Kobo Arc for dedicated fans of e-readers or someone looking for their first e-reader.
You can purchase your own Kobo Arc at the Kobo website.(These are not associate links.  I do not get any money from readers using these links.)

Product Review: Prescription Glasses from Firmoo!

As you guys know, this is a book blog and I don’t normally review anything other than books but when Firmoo approached me about reviewing a pair of glasses, I jumped at the chance!

About Firmoo:

“Firmoo is the world’s most popular online eyeglasses store. Vision and Fashion the Frugal Way is the ultimate goal of Firmoo, so it has always committed itself to providing customers with high-quality and fashionable eyewear at the most affordable prices. Years of expertise in optical industry enable firmoo.com to offer varieties of prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in a frugal way and to be the ultimate fashion events guide. Since the establishment of our company, we have served over 300,000+ customers and now we also have 470,000+ fans on facebook. We have always been committed ourselves to offering customers the best quality products at the most affordable prices, 85%~90% lower than that in the brick-and-mortar optical stores. Moreover, all our glasses are free for first-time customers.”

I’ve had to wear glasses for distance for the past few years and while I don’t really enjoy wearing them, I am much more comfortable in them when they are cute. This new pair I received from Firmoo definitely fits that requirement.  This is the pair that I got!

Source
The pair of glasses I chose are black large framed glasses.  They are very different from any pair of glasses I have owned in the past and I was nervous about getting them without trying them on.  Since they are such large frames, I was worried they would look a little grannyish (totally a word!)  Luckily customers can submit pictures and based on the pictures of others, I figured this pair would look good with my face shape and they did.  They are very stylish and I’ve gotten so many compliments.  They’re also just really fun.
Another worry of mine was how well they would fit.  My previous pair of glasses was always slipping down my nose and they really annoyed me. I didn’t have that problem with my first pair of glasses from Firmoo so I wasn’t too worried about it this time and I was right.  I don’t have that problem with this pair and they aren’t loose at all.  If they ever do get loose though they came with a tightening kit (that’s perfect for any glasses, not just the pair you buy.)
My one complaint is that the frames are a little flimsy.  I have to be sure to store them in the case when I’m not wearing them so they don’t get squished in my bag.  That is a minor complaint though seeing as they came with a sturdy case for when I have to throw them in a bag.
Overall, these glasses are even better than the first pair I received from Firmoo.  If you are looking to switch up your style I highly suggest buying from Firmoo.  With their prices, you can really afford to buy a pair of glasses for every day of the week.  =)
Check out Firmoo’s great selection of glasses and don’t forget that you can get your first pair for free!

Kindle Paperwhite Review

source
I’m not normally a product reviewer but in this case I just had to share with you guys.  I recently was given a Kindle Paperwhite and to be completely honest, I had no clue what to expect.  Sure, I’d looked at some reviews online and I’d asked other bloggers but I didn’t know how I’d feel about it until I actually got my own.  I’m a huge fan of paper books and transitioning to ebooks has been hard for me.  I still prefer paper books (and I always will) but reading ebooks has almost become necessary for bloggers.  I figured if I’m going to read them, might as well get a good ereader.
The Paperwhite far exceeded my expectations.  I expected to not mind reading on but in fact, I love reading on it.  I can certainly see why ereaders are becoming more popular and definitely why people recommend Kindles.
First off, the big draw of a backlit screen wasn’t something that I initially cared about.  It was actually something I was worried about.  Reading on a computer screen really bothers my eyes and I was worried that having a backlit screen would be the same way.  That’s definitely not the case at all.  The screen still  has no glare, the ink is the same as any other Kindle, the resolution is actually better, and the light makes it quite a bit easier to see.  Also, I don’t travel much but I have recently and I must say that the built in light has really helped.  It’s so nice to be able to read in a dark car since I always forget a book light.
Another thing that helps with travel is the size.  The Kindle Paperwhite is so small.  It’s got a good size screen though so don’t worry about not being able to read it.  I just love that I can throw it in my purse and not have to worry about space.  It’s also small enough that I can hold it with one hand which I really like.  However, with small size does come some fragility so definitely get a case for it.  I’ve already got one on mine and I feel a lot more confident now that I’m not going to break it.
One thing I had to get used to about this Kindle though was the touch screen.  I’ve always had a Kindle with keypad and it has the buttons to turn the pages.  When I first got my Paperwhite I was a little lost.  I kept trying to turn the pages with the buttons that weren’t there.  If you’re transitioning from a traditional ereader to this one, just keep that in mind.  Other than that I truly adore the touch screen.  It’s super easy to turn the pages (you can either swipe the page or tap the screen) and I actually find it easier to navigate than my older Kindle.
I also want to mention that I got the Kindle with ads and I was a little nervous about that.  I know the one without ads isn’t much more expensive but I didn’t feel that the extra money would be worth it and I was right.  The ads show up on the lock screen of your Kindle which means you only see them when you’re not actually reading.  I have no problem at all with this.  I admit that I thought the ads would pop up in the middle of my book.
Oh and fun little feature: not only does the Paperwhite tell you what percentage of the book you’ve read, it also tells you how much time it should take you to read the book.  It bases this number on the rate of your page turns and it’s a really neat little feature.
Truly the only complaint I have with the Kindle Paperwhite has to do with the backlight.  Because of the addition of the backlight there is a slight blue tint around the edges of the pages.  It’s faint, but noticeable.  No matter how bright or how dim the screen, these hints of blue still show up around the edges.  It’s a bit annoying but nothing that really makes me dislike my Kindle.

source
Overall, I highly recommend the Kindle Paperwhite if you’re hoping to transition from an older ereader or get your first!  It has so many wonderful little features and I look forward to reading books on mine a lot in the future!

Product review: my new bookcase from CSN Office Furniture!

A couple weeks ago, before I left for vacation, I mentioned that I was getting a product from CSN Stores for review.  I chose to review another bookcase from their huge selection and I chose the SEI 55″ H Spine Book Tower.  I ordered it on Monday and received it on Wednesday so I was super happy and had to immediately put it together.

Here is what the pieces looked like in the box:

The box was lot heavier than I expected it to be so I had to drag it back to my room but other than that it was great.  Once I got everything out of the box and out of the plastic it was so easy to put together.  It came with everything I needed to assemble the bookcase and I managed to get it put together all on my own and in about 20 minutes.  It was the easiest furniture assembly that I have ever done.

Put together, it looks beautiful:

Of course, it looks even better with my books on it:

I love it.  It’s little so it fits in the one open spot in my room but it holds tons of books.  I counted and I think I got 65 on it.  I was kind of surprised because I didn’t think it would hold that many but I am glad that it did because I really needed somewhere to put my books.  (Oh and sorry that you can see into my closet.  Hehe.)

Overall, there isn’t a single thing about my new bookcase that I don’t absolutely adore.  It’s little but big enough and it’s sturdy too so I don’t ever have to worry about having too many books on it.  The assembly was easy and it was totally worth it.  You won’t find a bookcase like this in stores, or at least I didn’t manage to.  I also think it’s very cool that it just looks like a big pile of books from far away.  Luckily, this pile won’t topple over.

In the end, this was the perfect choice for me and for anyone else with limited space.  It was a great price and I know that I will get tons of use out of it over the years.  This is one bookcase that will be going with me wherever I move.  I know that it will match whatever I want perfectly.  I greatly appreciate CSN Office Furniture giving me the chance to review one of their products.  I love their site and I can’t wait to see what I find on there next.

Reading Glasses Review!

Almost a week ago, I was contacted by Reading Glasses Shopper about reviewing a pair of reading glasses. I don’t use reading glasses (yet) but my mom does and she offered to help me with my review. She would never turn down a pair of reading glasses, especially cute ones.

Here is a picture of the pair I picked out for my mom:

I got them earlier this week and they were exactly what I wanted. These are one of the more simple designs but Reading Glasses Shopper has tons of designs to choose from if you want something a little more detailed. These are really stylish, just plain black with some rhinestone detailing which I thought would be perfect. They match anything.

The pair that I chose is called The Joyce and they are great. My mom is always using reading glasses which means she is always buying them but sometimes they aren’t very good quality and they break. These, on the other hand, have been great. They are sturdy and they come with a really cute case so she can just toss them in her purse and she doesn’t have to worry about not being able to find them or them getting smashed by everything else. They have really come in handy this past week.

Overall, reading glasses are something I know I will probably need in the future so I am really glad I know where I can buy a good pair at a great price. Nothing is over twenty dollars so everything is super affordable and I have already picked out some super cute pairs that I wouldn’t mind getting. And I know my mom has picked out pretty much every pair they offer as ones she wouldn’t mind getting! =]

In the end, any pair that you get from Reading Glasses Shopper would be a great buy. And if you want to try a pair before buying I will be giving away two pairs to two lucky readers so stop back later for the form!

Product Review: Bookcase from CSN Office Furniture

A couple weeks ago I posted about being offered a bookcase to review. I picked the Falls Village Five Shelf Bookcase in Soft White and I just got it the other day. I finally had time to set it up and with the help of my mom, it is perfectly put together and set up right next to my bed.

Here is a picture of all the pieces leaning against the wall:

It was a bit bigger than I expected but still not hard to put together once all the pieces were out of the box. Everything was all there and neatly packaged so nothing got damaged. It came with everything you would need and all I had to use to put it together was a flathead screwdriver and a hammer. Also, the instructions were very easy to understand and there were no mishaps in putting it together. All-in-all it took about an hour and then came the fun part of loading it up with my books.

And here it is…

The finished bookcase, but without any books! Doesn’t it look lonely?

There that’s better. Now it is perfect!

It fit perfectly next to my bed and I can reach over and grab a book to read when I get bored. I just love how it fits and it looks perfect in my room. Also, it holds a ton of my books so no more piles on the floor.

Overall, this bookcase was even better than I expected. It’s sturdy enough to hold my books and attractive enough that I like the way it looks in my room. I did feel a little overwhelmed when I first took it out of the box and saw all the pieces that I had to put together but after looking over the instructions everything seemed a lot easier. It all went together perfectly and my only complaint is that the backing is a little flimsy and didn’t line up exactly right. It’s a very small complaint, though. Once I got it flattened out everything went together just fine and it looks great with my books and knick-knacks all lined up on it.

In the end, this is a great buy. I love everything about it and I know I will use it a ton now and over the years. Whereas my old bookcase was too crappy to even hold all my books this one is in no danger of collapsing. I totally recommend this bookcase for anybody like me with
quite a few books and no space to put them and I really appreciate CSN Office Furniture giving me the chance to review it. Their shipping is fast and free in some cases and their items are more than worth it. I will definitely be frequenting their site in the future for any purchases for my home office.
