Summary:
On one side of the border lies the modern world: the internet, homecoming dances, cell phones. On the other side dwell the ancient monsters who spark humanity’s deepest fears: dragons.
Seventeen-year-old Kay Wyatt knows she’s breaking the law by rock climbing near the border, but she’d rather have an adventure than follow the rules. When the dragon Artegal unexpectedly saves her life, the rules are abruptly shattered, and a secret friendship grows between them.
But suspicion and terror are the legacy of human and dragon inter actions, and the fragile truce that has maintained peace between the species is unraveling. As tensions mount and battles begin, Kay and Artegal are caught in the middle. Can their friendship change the course of a war?
*****
Voices of Dragons is a very unique book. I didn’t actually think that I would like it because it’s not something I am normally interested in but I was pleasantly surprised. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The story in Voices of Dragons was super original. I have only read one or two books about dragons and they were set in the past. Carrie Vaughn set her book in the present and it worked surprisingly well. To me, the story was more interesting and fast-paced because of the time period. I didn’t have any problem getting into the book and sticking with it.
My biggest complaint about the book has to do with the characters. The relationships weren’t very well developed and I would have liked more about them. The story was all about Kay and Artegal. There wasn’t really anything about Kay’s life when she wasn’t visiting Artegal. I wanted to get deeper into her relationship with Jon but that didn’t happen, at least not in this book.
Overall, Voices of Dragons is a must-read for fantasy lovers. The story is intriguing and I can’t wait for the next book in the series. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger. =]
First line: Her parents were going to kill her for this.
