First Line Friday (6)

First Line Friday is a feature created by me, where I post five first lines from some books that I have on my TBR pile.  You guys then get to vote, based on the first lines, for the book that I will read next. =)

Title:  Anna Dressed In Blood
Author:  Kendare Blake
Release date:  August 30, 2011

The grease-slicked hair is a dead giveaway–no pun intended.

Title:  The Faerie Ring
Author:  Kiki Hamilton
Release date:  September 27, 2011

“You wouldn’t be here pickin’ pockets, would you?”

Title:  Daughter Of Smoke & Bone
Author:  Laini Taylor
Release date:  September 27, 2011

Walking to school over the snow-muffled cobbles, Karou had no sinister premonitions about the day.  It seemed like just another Monday, innocent but for its essential Mondayness, not to mention its Januaryness.  It was cold, and it was dark–in the dead of winter the sun didn’t rise until eight–but it was also lovely.  The falling snow and the early hour conspired to paint Prague ghostly, like a tinytype photograph, all silver and haze.

Title:  The Unbecoming Of Mara Dyer
Author:  Michelle Hodkin
Release date:  September 27, 2011

My name is Mara Dyer, but my lawyer told me I had to choose something.  A pseudonym.  A nom de plume, for all of us studying for the SATs.  I know that having a fake name is strange, but trust me–it’s the most normal thing about my life right now.  Even telling you this much probably isn’t smart.  But without my big mouth, no one would know that a seventeen-year-old who likes Death Cab For Cutie was responsible for the murders.  No one would know that somewhere out there is a B student with a body count.  And it’s important that you know, so you’re not next.

Title: The Watchers (Isle Of Night #1)
Author:  Veronica Wolff
Release date:  September 6, 2011

I looked around my room for the last time. I was leaving.  Finally.

For good.

So based on these first lines, which book do you think I should read and review next?

  1. I have thought about doing something like this for so long, but you beat me to it! My elementary librarian always told me that when you’re picking a book you should read the synopsis and the first line to see if its for you. I just added several books to my to-buy list that I’ve been ignoring based on their first line. Thanks!

  2. well, I’m reading Anna Dressed in Blood right now, and it’s fantastic, so I’m a little biased. I also can’t wait to read the Faerie Ring and Mara Dryer. Those are tough choices you have there!

  3. Oh Karou! She’s awesome! I love the setting too, and it never got boring to read the description like it does with other authors!

Anna! Cas’ voice is awesome 🙂

  4. I’ve gotta go with The Faerie Ring because it sounds superb. My other choice would be Daughter of Smoke and Bone (I’ve already read this and it’s one of my favourites!)
