Kit and Fancy Cordelle are sisters of the best kind: best friends, best confidantes, and best accomplices. The daughters of the infamous Bonesaw Killer, Kit and Fancy are used to feeling like outsiders, and that’s just the way they like it. But in Portero, where the weird and wild run rampant, the Cordelle sisters are hardly the oddest or most dangerous creatures around.

It’s no surprise when Kit and Fancy start to give in to their deepest desire—the desire to kill. What starts as a fascination with slicing open and stitching up quickly spirals into a gratifying murder spree. Of course, the sisters aren’t killing just anyone, only the people who truly deserve it. But the girls have learned from the mistakes of their father, and know that a shred of evidence could get them caught. So when Fancy stumbles upon a mysterious and invisible doorway to another world, she opens a door to endless possibilities….

Dia Reeves’ debut novel, Bleeding Violet, was one of my favorite books of 2010 but I can’t say that Slice Of Cherry will be a favorite for 2011. I did enjoy the book and I definitely thought it was just as unique as Bleeding Violet. This one was a lot darker though and it took me a while to get past that which made it harder for me to get into the story.
Kit and Fancy Cordelle are not normal main characters.  They like to kill things; mainly animals but they want to branch into human killing.  They eventually do start killing humans and the murders are very gory things.  The girls feel no remorse for what they do and the way the town reacts is almost the same. I couldn’t understand that, although it is explained why the town doesn’t mind. Eventually I started to like the sisters but it took me awhile to get past the gruesome killings.
The thing that I was most disappointed about was the fact that you don’t get to see as much of the crazy side of Portero, Texas in this book.  I wanted more of the monsters that were in Bleeding Violet.  They were talked about in Slice Of Cherry but they didn’t actually play much of a role which saddened me.
My last comment is about the content.  It is definitely not suited for younger teens or even some older teens.  I would almost recommend this for adult YA readers only.  There were some bright spots to the story, like Ilan and Gabe, but not enough to make it a happy book.
Overall, Slice Of Cherry is a good book that could have been better but I would still recommend checking it out if you liked Bleeding Violet and can handle reading about gruesome murders.  =)

First line:  Fancy only allowed three people in the whole world to get close to her: Daddy, who was on death row; Madda, who was working the graveyard shift; and Kit, who was dead to the world in the bed next to hers.

  1. I have been waiting to read this because it has had a lot of mixed reviews. I thought Bleeding Violet was INSANE, and I don’t know if my mind is ready to go back into that world again.

  2. If there’s animal torture and murder in this, like you say, it’s too much for me.

I’m glad the town was creepy and had a Gothic feel to it!!

Lovely review and lovely cover 🙂
