Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. For more information and a list of past and future topics, go here.

Links go to my reviews!

1. Saba from Blood Red Road by Moira Young: Saba is kick-ass for many reasons but number one on that list is her family loyalty.  She sets off a major journey all to save her brother.  Now that’s love.

2. Rachel from Defiance by C.J. Redwine: No matter how hard she’s pushed or how much she’s beaten, Rachel never gives up.  Sure there are times when she feels like it but she perseveres and that is what makes her kick-ass.

3. Ismae from Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers:  Ismae is trained by a group of nuns to become an assassin for the god of Death.  Need I say more?

4. Alex from Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick: Alex not only manages to take care of herself when the world is falling apart, she takes care of lots of others.  She’s strong, brave, resilient, and just plain awesome.

5. Tris from Divergent by Veronica Roth: Tris is willing to leave behind everything she has ever known to pursue her dreams.  In the process she jumps out of moving trains, faces her worst fears, and learns how to stand up for herself and others.

6. Janelle from Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris: Janelle does not take crap from anyone!  She can take care of herself, she’s brave, and the girl is fierce.  Don’t mess with her.

7. Verity from Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: Verity is willing to give up her life for her country.  No matter how beaten she is, she never gives up.  She takes bravery to a whole new level.

8. Maddie from Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: Maddie is kick-ass in a very different way than Verity.  No matter how hard something is, Maddie will do it, all for the sake of a friend.  She’s a different kind of brave than Verity but she’s just as awesome.

9. Miranda from False Memory by Dan Krokos: Miranda has to take in a lot of information in a very short period of time.  She goes from knowing nothing to knowing way too much but she takes it in stride.  She also knows how to take control of her life and she doesn’t shy away from danger.  Oh and she has some major fighting skills.

10. Velveteen from Velveteen by Daniel Marks: Let’s see, a girl who is killed by a serial killer named Bonesaw who then goes back to haunt him after her death as well as save his current victims.  I’d say that makes Velveteen pretty kick-ass.

  1. I haven’t read any of the books but Grave Mercy and Velveteen have been on my wishlist for a while! Death’ assassin and a girl bent on revenge – doesn’t get much for kickass than that 😉 All your heroines sound like they have a right to be on the list!

You can check out mine here if you want.

  2. Tris and Ismae! Love them!
And I can’t wait to read False Memory! I saw Dan Krokos at an event and he was so funny. I’m definitely interested to see what his writing style is like, and the story sounds really interesting!

  3. Heriones eh? I found Éowyn in the LOTR books to be an excellent character, far surpassing the characters of the hobbits imo. She uttered the now well-known quotation about her fear being ‘to stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire’ and eventually sneaks off and destroys the Witch-King. The best part of this whole sub-plot in my opinion is that Tolkein doesn’t go waving any feminist flags while he’s at it; he just treats her like a normal person wanting out of her life.

On the other hand I found Catherine Linton from Wuthering Heights to be a terrible anti-heroine, but then again it’s an old old book lol

  4. I am personally having such mixed feelings in reading Velveteen – I hear that it is very graphic and I don’t know if I can handle that… Unraveling and Grave Mercy sound great! Will have to get to these soon, thanks 🙂

  5. Rachel is my favorite too! She’s strong and determined but she knows how to communicate with the people she’s working with and with Logan!
