Short Story Saturday: Life In a Shoe by Heidi R. Kling

Short Story Saturday was created by Lauren at 365 Days of Reading.  I can’t guarantee that I’ll post a review every Saturday but I will post one as often as I can!

I am currently reading Two And Twenty Dark Tales: Dark Retellings of Mother Goose Rhymes.

book cover of Two And Twenty Dark TalesShort Story: Life in a Shoe
Author: Heidi R. Kling
Anthology: Two And Twenty Dark Tales

Summary: Life in a Shoe is a retelling of There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe.

My thoughts:  I was severely disappointed with this short story.  I loved Heidi R. Kling’s novel, Sea, and I expected more from this short story.  While the writing was just as good as in Sea, the story was way too short.  I felt like I had just started it when it ended.  There was not enough for me to connect to the characters or sympathize with them.  It needed to be more fleshed out.

Overall, Life in a Shoe fell flat for me.  It was just too short for me to really get anything from it other than a sense of disappointment.

  1. That is mainly the reason why I never read anthologies-the length. I just can’t get a feel for the characters and the plot is always underdeveloped. Novellas I love, because you already know the characters and their backstory, so it’s just a little bonus. The background in a novel alone is sometimes the length of a short story. Good review though, Katie!

  2. That’s one of my favorite fairytales! I would love to see it in a full-length graphic novel actually 🙂

Too bad this was too short.
