In Allison Sekemoto's world, there is one rule left: Blood calls to blood

She has done the unthinkable: died so that she might continue to live. Cast out of Eden and separated from the boy she dared to love, Allie will follow the call of blood to save her creator, Kanin, from the psychotic vampire Sarren. But when the trail leads to Allie's birthplace in New Covington, what Allie finds there will change the world forever—and possibly end human and vampire existence.

There's a new plague on the rise, a strain of the Red Lung virus that wiped out most of humanity generations ago—and this strain is deadly to humans and vampires alike. The only hope for a cure lies in the secrets Kanin carries, if Allie can get to him in time.

Allison thought that immortality was forever. But now, with eternity itself hanging in the balance, the lines between human and monster will blur even further, and Allie must face another choice she could never have imagined having to make.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read this review if you have not read The Immortal Rules!

Julie Kagawa has done it again. Need I say more? Okay, well if that’s not enough to get you to read The Eternity Cure, I’ll keep going.

The Eternity Cure picks up a few months after the end of The Immortal Rules. Allison has left Zeke in Eden and now she is on her own, searching for Kanin. She’s sure he’s still alive but she’s not sure how much longer he’ll be sane. She’s determined to save her sire no matter what, even if it means teaming up with one of her enemies. However, things are only going to get worse for Kanin and everyone in New Covington. Now, not only does Allison have to save her sire, she also has to save the world (or what’s left of it.)

So it’s safe to say that Julie Kagawa really ups the stakes in The Eternity Cure. Now, not only is Kanin’s life on the line, so is everyone else’s, human and vampire alike. Allison sets out to save her sire but along the way she also gets roped into saving the rest of the world from Sarren and his crazy new virus. The tension in this book was crazy! First, Allison has to team up with crazy Jackal to try and save Kanin. Then she has to team up with someone from her past to save the world. And as if that’s not enough, she then has to face her past and one key person from it. The Eternity Cure is pretty much just surprise after surprise. Sure, I saw a few of them coming but most of them I didn’t. I was shocked at some of the characters that ended up playing a pretty big role in this book. I was also shocked at how far Julie Kagawa takes things with her characters. She’s not afraid to tear apart readers’ hearts. (She does kind of put them back together again though!)

The story is rather slow but I’ve come to expect that from Julie Kagawa. I didn’t feel that a 100% fast-paced story was necessary in this case. There’s still a lot of world-building that needs to be done and a lot of that is taken care of in this book. There’s also a lot more history included, like what really happened with the first Red Lung virus. Because of this the crazy things that happened really meant more to me since they kind of came out of nowhere. Just because there was a lot of information packed into the story didn’t mean that Julie Kagawa left out the awesome fight scenes we’ve come to expect from Allison and her trusty katana. There was no shortage of virus-infected people attacks and molemen attacks! I truly felt that The Eternity Cure was the perfect mix of informative and action-packed.

Also, I can’t go without mentioning the characters. I admit that I got a little peeved with Allison. Ever since leaving Zeke in Eden she reverted back to her original vampire nature. She just seemed so unfeeling and cold. However, this side of Allison didn’t last forever and I enjoyed seeing her changing throughout the book. As for Jackal, he’s the same as ever. I hate to admit it but I kind of found him funny. He’s totally an ass and I kind of wanted him to die at parts but he also cracked me up. Then there is Sarren. Holy crap, Julie Kagawa knows how to write a villain. Sarren is crazy with a capital C. He takes pleasure in other people’s pain and he doesn’t hide that. He is set on revenge and he will do whatever it takes to get it. He creeped me out so much! The Eternity Cure just has an all around fabulous cast of characters.

Now, if you’re like me, you won’t be able to resist reading this one as soon as you get your hands on it but fair warning, the ending will kill you. Like I said, Julie Kagawa kind of breaks your heart with this one. The ending completely took me by surprise and left me with my mouth hanging wide open. I couldn’t believe it. I wanted to cry and scream but above all I just wanted to beg for the next book. The wait is going to be killer for anyone who reads it but I just know it’s going to be worth it.

Overall, The Eternity Cure gets all the stars (or in this case, shoes.) I cannot get enough of Julie Kagawa’s books. Get a copy of this one and read it as soon as possible!

  1. I can’t believe this book is finally almost out-it feels like we’ve been waiting such a long time. I have an e-ARC to dive into and I cannot wait for it to come up on my reading schedule.

  2. I’m really excited to get my hands on this one! I love Julie’s books and this one, I’m sure, will be no exception! I’m really pumped to learn more about the history of this world, too!

    Great Review!

  3. I am so dying to read this, but with that mention of pain at the ending I’m rather scared now… *bites lip* I’ll still get my hands on it as soon as I can though!

  4. I’m happy that she takes her time with the world building. It drives me crazy when that sort of detail isn’t fleshed out. I’m not surprised this book is excellent though! All of hers are.

  5. The ending! THE ENDING!! Poor poor Allie!!

I think Julie Kagawa’s characters and creatures are so well done, very unique, in all her books.

Will you be reading Talon, about dragons? She also makes beautiful etsy dragons if you like collecting them.
