The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Allegiant, the final book in the Divergent trilogy, was nothing like I expected. Veronica Roth takes readers on a roller coaster ride of emotions with this final installment. While a different ending might have made me happier, I was quite satisfied with the way things tied up.

This is going to be a short and sweet review. I won’t spoil anything for you guys who haven’t read the book yet. Veronica Roth didn’t go in a direction that I thought she would. It seems like almost all books these days, no matter how bleak the world, somehow have a happy ending. That was not the case with Allegiant. (If you’ve read it, you know what I’m talking about.) I’m not really unhappy about the ending though. It was more realistic than any other ending and I felt good about that. Sure, I cried my eyes out for hours, but I was satisfied.

One thing that I didn’t really love about Allegiant was Four/Tobias. Readers finally get to see things from his point of view and I expected a lot more from him. I wanted the fierce guy with only four fears that we were introduced to in the first book. Instead we got a guy who came across as weak and it seemed like he relied a lot on Tris. Also, when he was left to his own devices, he really didn’t make very smart decisions. There were just so many problems with his character in Allegiant and I was disappointed.

The story is rather slow paced at first but once you get about halfway through, things pick up. However, even though the beginning was slow, I never once wanted to put the book down. If you’ve enjoyed the previous two books in the trilogy, you will enjoy this one. That’s all there is to it.

Overall, Allegiant was a satisfying conclusion to the Divergent trilogy. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I will definitely read whatever Veronica Roth writes in the future.

What others are saying about Allegiant:
The Book Smugglers’ review: “Ultimately, Allegiant is a book that has its many flaws and missteps, but it’s an ambitious book that goes for all the marbles.”Nerdy Book Club’s review: “There are those who may not agree with me, but I say well done, Veronica Roth, well done.”

Fantasy Book Critic’s review: “Overall, Veronica Roth is an extremely talented writer and I look forward to future books.”

  1. YES! I loved the ballsy ending because for once it WAS realistic. I would have changed that thing that Four almost does at the end but Christina stops him (if you get what I’m hinting at) I was all about that because I was so sad but whatever. Anyway, yesss the only thing I didn’t like was how Four was portrayed. I feel like with so many dystopian books, they begin with the men being so strong and then end with them being weaker or something and it’s sad because I loved Four because of his strength and it’s like, the author took that from him and made him pathetic even sometimes. Either way, I was happy (even though in tears) with the ending for the same reasons as you!

  2. I’m glad you enjoyed this. With all the people so upset about the ending I have been putting it off, so I’m glad to find someone who was satisfied with it. I also just don’t want to see the trilogy end. Wonderful review.

  3. Your statement at the ending “If you’ve enjoyed the previous two books in the trilogy, you will enjoy this one. That’s all there is to it.” is so true and the only reason people aren’t liking it is because they are comparing it to Divergent and Insurgent which were AMAZING. By itself this is still a very good book.

  4. I completely agree. It was a very good book, especially with the ending. I didn’t appreciate Four’s character, though I wonder whether Roth was trying to cement the idea of his genes being corrupt or something? Either way, he was weak and whiny and it wasn’t appreciated by me (or anyone else apparently!)
Great series, can’t wait to see what she puts out next.

  5. I thought the ending made a lot of sense, considering the characters’ history in the series, but I also felt like it was the easy way out. I also found that there was so much stuff to get through, before the good stuff started happening. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first two books, but I enjoyed them. I can’t say that about Allegiant, unfortunately.

I definitely agree with you about Four – he was nothing like the strong, brave and confident hero in the first two books. Definitely a disappointment.

  6. I got so angry at the ending. I know it was daring and right for the story, but I was so into the characters I really wanted them to get a somewhat hopeful ending. Not perfect, but hopeful. It kinda ruined the rest of the series for me in a way, because I totally loved the relationships in the book and then it’s like it was all a wash.

Lovely review and I’m glad you loved it! 🙂
